Good day! I have water in my well with high iron content. When water settles, a yellow-orange precipitate forms. Please tell me how it is possible to purify water to the level of industrial water for domestic needs and for irrigation?

Hello. Your problem is very familiar to me. The only thing you should do is to take your water for analysis to determine whether the reason for the yellow-orange hue is precisely in the high iron content.

A similar shade is also observed when it contains:

    1. Tannin and humic acid. This effect is usually obtained when the soil is peaty type. The components are not harmful to health, but washing white things in such water is problematic.
    2. Clay and sand. Rather, clay, since sand gives a less saturated shade and grains of sand are usually noticeable during cooling. The color is more turbid yellow, gray yellow, brown yellow.
    3. Organics, for example, leaves, any grass. Again, you probably would have noticed this moment. Bright yellow, brown, orange-yellow unclear.
    4. Excess iron. Water acquires a characteristic metallic taste. Usually transparent with yellowness, bright or weak.

You really seem more like 4 option so far, but laboratory analysis is better to carry out.

I’ll clarify that by a well you mean a classic spring with water? Increasingly, people began to call a well a well located in an underground reservoir, and this confuses the correct answer. I will assume that the first option.

It would be nice to know how you get water from a well - carry it in buckets or does it have a water system? And if equipped, how are communications arranged, from what material? Because there were times when people sinned on water, and pipe corrosion was to blame. Consider this option, please.

If you still have problems with iron in water, this issue is solved by choosing a filter, thus:

    1. Up to 2 mg / l - a fairly ordinary, simplest deferrizing filter is enough.
    2. Above this level - a multi-component cleaning system with aeration function and dual osmosis system is recommended.

For the selection of a specific model, you can consult in a specialized store or at the master, who will select the system for you. Unfortunately, we have too little information on your design and so far we can’t advise anything specific.

A yellow-orange precipitate during water sedimentation is formed due to contact with air, oxidation of divalent dissolved iron, which is present in your well water, and its transition to a trivalent form. Such water can not only be drunk, but also undesirable to use for irrigation and other technical needs.

Correspondingly, cleaning of iron occurs in a similar way - oxidation, transfer of iron to the trivalent state and filtration of precipitated precipitate. Cleaning is carried out using special aeration systems (columns). But they are quite expensive and take up a large amount of space.

If you need to purify the water not for drinking, but for watering, then there is an easier way - upholding. Pour water into a bucket or barrel and leave for a day while maintaining access to air (oxygen). After this, drain 2/3 of the volume, preferably through cheesecloth. Most of the iron will remain in the lower third, which cannot be used.
