Friends, in early October, the smell of sewage appeared in the apartment - which intensified every day. We studied the structure of the sewage system and found out that a plug was put on the fan pipe. The cap was removed, but the smell remained (less, of course, but still there).

What can you advise? What work still needs to be done to completely get rid of the smell?

Hello. The unpleasant smell in the apartment can be caused both by a common house sewage system, as well as an inside apartment.

    1. If the smell is present in the lower floors of the house, then most likely the problem is in the general sewage system. The reason for this may be leaks and blockage. A survey of the sewage system should be carried out to exclude the possibility of violating the integrity of the pipes. Accordingly, if it is a blockage, then clean the sewer pipes.

    2. If it is an intra-apartment sewerage, then you must first determine where exactly you have an unpleasant smell: in the kitchen, in the toilet, in the bathroom or throughout the apartment. If you find the smell in any one place - check the presence of a water seal and its volume. Sometimes sanitary devices are connected directly through a corrugated pipe and then an unpleasant odor is inevitable. Also, if the siphon has a small volume, it may not cope with the delay of an unpleasant odor. Another cause of the unpleasant odor may be a partial blockage directly in the siphons themselves - the remains of food, hair, soap. All this can accumulate in the knee of the siphon and exude an unpleasant odor.

    3. If the matter is still in the fan pipe, then you need to see if the water in all the hydraulic locks of the plumbing fixtures is standing in the apartment or not, because it is the lack of water in the elbows of the drain pipes that causes an unpleasant odor and indicates a blockage in the fan pipe. It is possible that when flushing water in the toilet, in other water seals under vacuum, from the blockage of the fan pipe, the water leaves the siphons and opens access to unpleasant odors.

From your question it is not entirely clear why the plug was on the fan pipe. If she always stood there, and when she was removed, the smell partially disappeared, then the reason is not in the fan pipe. But if the Criminal Code recently put a stopper and a smell appeared in the apartment, then apparently the sewage system was clogged through the fan pipe and maybe they just did not clean it properly.

And yes, an umbrella must be installed on the fan pipe so that the pipe can function normally and not have clogs from fallen leaves, flying birds, snow, large insects.

The situation is similar, we have a smell in a 2-storey private house. True, not always. And it may appear in the bathroom on the 2nd floor or on the 1st floor in the shower. It’s worth the installation of biological treatment “Biodeka” - well, the smell is eerie throughout the house. They live in the house constantly. We clean the station every six months of the year. Do not tell me what could be the reason?
