Greetings! If the pipes of the underground storm system are installed at a depth of 30 centimeters, is there any need to preserve them for the winter? If so, how? Thank.

    Good afternoon, Igor.

You don’t have to worry. At a depth of 30 cm there is a pipe, only at the junction with the storm water inlet. Accordingly, is the highest point further goes down. Most likely a pipe with a diameter of 110 mm was used, i.e. with the correct slope, the bottom can be no more than 10 mm of water. Free space for expansion in case of freezing is sufficient.

If in your case there is a landscape feature and the pipe is close to the surface along the entire length, the builders have provided the correct pillow and backfill. On all sides there should be rubble that retains heat. Otherwise, the pipe would have suffered mechanical damage due to loads even before frost.

Before starting a cold, perform standard manipulations:

    1. Check, and if necessary, clean the storm water inlet from debris.
    2. Repeat the same procedure in the manhole.
    3. Remove the grill and cover the hole with an ordinary rag until it reaches around-the-clock plus temperature.

I recommend that you familiarize yourself with article on our website about the technology of cleaning storm sewers.

It is necessary to prepare storm water pipes for winter, this is especially true at the beginning and end of winter, when often the plus temperature and even rains are sharply replaced by severe frosts. So the advice is right in preparation. On the other hand, if all the technological aspects are fulfilled, then there is nothing to worry about. But to foresee all the options is simply impossible. For example, in my storm house at the dacha, it “burst” with ice. And all because +5 degrees at the beginning of March sharply changed by -10 in just a few hours. So it's better to play it safe.
